Civil War Experience Day
Bringing History to Life for the PMLD Community.
Celebrating the 375th Anniversary of the Battle of Worcester through touch, sound, and movement.
History Belongs to Everyone
History isn’t just about reading textbooks or looking at static museum displays. For the 375th anniversary of the English Civil War, The Myriad Centre is throwing open its doors to host an immersive, fully accessible Sensory Civil War Experience Day.
We are inviting adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) from across Worcestershire to join our clients for a unique narrative journey back to the 1640s. Together, we will explore, experience, and retell the story of the Civil War through the senses.
Event Details:
Thursday 3rd September
The Myriad Centre, Worcester
Free to attend
But spaces are strictly limited to 10 external participants (plus their carers).
The Day’s March: What to Expect
Our day is structured as a sensory story, guiding participants through a soldier’s lived experience of the war:
The Morning: Identity & Allegiance
Are you a Cavalier or a Roundhead? Participants will handle real replica artifacts, feeling the weight of iron helmets, the texture of leather armour, and the softness of feathered hats. After choosing a side, everyone will decorate their own period-appropriate hat using ribbons, feathers and fabrics.
Midday: The Civil War Camp Picnic
We will gather together to rest like soldiers between engagements. To ensure everyone’s complex dietary and texture requirements are met safely, attendees are asked to bring their own packed lunches. We will provide the historic atmosphere and a wonderful shared social space.
The Afternoon: The Battle of Worcester Reenactment
The conflict comes alive! Led by Worcester Warriors, participants will march and wheel to the rhythmic beat of battle drums. Divided into teams, we will engage in fully inclusive battle games tailored for all abilities, including wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, concluding with a victory celebration.
How to Book Your Free Place
We are delighted to welcome up to 10 external participants from the wider Worcestershire PMLD community to join us. Spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Before the event, our team will contact you to learn all about your person’s specific routines, dietary needs, communication methods, and triggers to ensure a safe, joyful day.
